What is Philips Saphi TV?

Philips Saphi TV refers to the ”Saphi” operating system, which is widely used on Philips’ more affordable European TV:s. It is under constant development and allows similar performance as Android and it requires a little more attention. It is a nicely presented Linux-based platform that follows the increasingly common GUI method of presenting rows of content service icons on a shaded background at the bottom of the screen. In addition to being Linux-based, the operating system is very stable for the use of the common man.

Features with Philips Saphi TV

A handy line of simple text options above the main content icon bar gives you access to other non-streamed content, such as your AV sources, TV channels, the App store, a search tool, and your TV settings. Do not be surprised by what you get out of this operating system. It offers HDR that provides excellent picture quality and premium Dolby sound. The OS comes with HDMI Arc support. Moreover, picture style presets (there are usually 5 different), all look incredibly good. The SAPHI control panel will give you quick access to the content you love.

Some of Europe’s Philips remote controls have handy QWERTY keyboards on the back to help you enter passwords, email addresses, search terms and the like. There is also a second level of icons, but unlike the similarly presented Samsung and LG methods, the second level is not contextually based on what you have selected in the main line. You can also use your voice to search as well. It is packed with all the neccesary features.

Are there any disadvantages?

Of course, there are disadvantages to having a Philips Saphi TV. Saphi does not have as many apps as the best competing platforms (or Android TV which is arguebly the best OS). Experience of it so far is a bit sluggish. However, it is more than acceptable as a smart TV interface. Tizen and WebOS perform clearly better absolutely, but for TV viewing, Saphi TV should be excellent as well.

Apps on Philips Saphi TV

What can mess things up are the Apps in the Gallery on your Philips Saphi TV. For example, you can already see that there are a few apps for you to install. Or even all available apps are already installed and ready for you.

These are apps such as SVTPlay, Rakuten, Viaplay etc. It is therefore not possible to install other apps that are not available in the app gallery. Because there is no Google Play Store, and then you can not access all the world’s apps.

Philips Saphi TV or Android OS

This is the ultimate question. Should you buy a Saphi TV or an Android instead? It’s up to you if you think the Google Play Store is such an important point for your purchase. You do not go wrong with Android in any case.

If you can find an Android TV for a low price, for example, it would be something to consider. Otherwise, an external device works just as well.

Conclusion

What Philips has designed with TP Vision with their Saphi TV is very flexible and has all the features you would expect, but with a limited app range. If you do not care about the apps, you can just as easily buy such a TV. If you want the range that the Google Play Store has, buy an Android TV instead.
